About This Site
What this is
The Philosophy Bookshelf (book.themodel.be) is a book guide for people who are curious about philosophy but freeze in front of the shelf, unsure which book to pick up first. This English edition selects five introductory titles currently available on amazon.com and presents them in a reading order that won't defeat you. A Japanese edition and a Korean edition are also maintained.
This site is the entry hall to author-by-author sister shops — The Descartes Bookshelf, The Nietzsche Bookshelf, The Schopenhauer Bookshelf — and to our section-by-section close readings of primary texts. Once a particular philosopher clicks for you here, those shops take over. Every review and reading-order recommendation rests on first-hand reading and clearly-stated bibliographic research.
How books are chosen and rated
- The list is built for a single job: getting a first-timer to finish a whole philosophy book and want a second. Titles are chosen so that a ladder holds — engaging entry, then a map, then a rigorous finish. Star ratings are our own; no Amazon customer reviews are reproduced.
- Where a book is a narrative, a survey, a book of practical essays, or a rigorous textbook, the review says exactly what it is and what role it can honestly play. A survey is a map, not the territory — and we say so.
- The list is not confined to the Western canon: an introduction to Eastern thought is included.
- All descriptions are written by us; no publisher copy is reproduced. Quotations are kept short and sourced.
- Cover images are jacket-style images of our own design and differ from the actual covers.
- Prices and availability change, so we do not print them; always check the Amazon product page.
Amazon link disclosure
As an Amazon Associate, this site (The Philosophy Bookshelf) may earn from qualifying purchases.
Book links on this edition go to product pages on Amazon (amazon.com). If a purchase is made through them, this site may receive a commission at no additional cost to you. Commissions never influence the ratings — recommending books you will actually finish, rather than books that merely sell, is in the end what serves readers best.
